Spider-Man Uses a Different, More Violent Fighting Style in No Way Home

Tom Holland says Spider-Man will use a more violent fighting style in No Way Home compared to his previous outings.

Tom Holland says he’ll be using a more violent fighting style in Spider-Man: No Way Home.

No Way Home will see Peter Parker face his biggest threat yet when the ghosts of past Spider-Men come back to haunt him. To survive an assault from the Green Goblin, Doctor Octopus, Sandman, The Lizard and Electro, the hero will be forced to break out the biggest weapon in his arsenal — his fists. “There are some fight scenes in this movie that are very violent,” the actor told TV Globo. “And it’s a fighting style different from what we’ve seen before. But really you will get to see Spider-Man using his fists in a ‘fight or run’ situation.”

In his five previous appearances in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Holland’s Spider-Man has generally prioritized using web-blasts against his foes instead of his strength. This preference was highlighted throughout Spider-Man: Homecoming when Peter gained access to his suit’s artificial intelligence. Nicknamed Karen, the A.I. gave Spider-Man an internal scanner that showed him how to subdue his foes with different fighting techniques. However, the sudden flux of new information overwhelmed Spider-Man and made it harder to perform specific tasks in battle.

Eventually, Peter became more comfortable with his suit’s potential and a slightly more aggressive combatant. In Avengers: Endgame, Spider-Man triggered his suit’s “instant kill mode,” which allowed him to take on Thanos and his minions. However, this was largely done by way of the robotic tentacles in his suit, meaning Spidey’s fists remained primarily at his sides.

Though Holland’s Spider-Man is arguably the most passive Peter, his predecessors were also more likely to swing on a web than to swing a fist at a foe. For example, Tobey Maguire’s most significant battles in the original Spider-Man trilogy ended with his rivals defeating themselves. Green Goblin killed himself with his glider, Doc Ock drowned while preventing a nuclear blast of his own making and Venom jumped into a pumpkin bomb. Similarly, Andrew Garfield’s Amazing Spider-Man villains met their end by their own hands, albeit with some help from Peter’s scientific prowess.

Spider-Man: No Way Home comes out in theaters on Dec. 17.
