What is Japandi?
“Japandi portrays minimalism, clear lines, and the usage of natural materials to create a serene set-up inside your home,” shares Lokendra Rawat, co-founder of a furniture brand, adding, “Usage of muted colour palettes and more focus on natural lights as well as elements such as plants and pottery is the base of Japandi home decor style.”
Sustainable and minimalistic
Sustainability and minimalism are the aspects that have made this design trend popular. “Japandi styles showcase beautiful craftsmanship with emphasis on quality and handmade pieces. The prevalence of natural materials and simple designs makes it a green decor style. Also, you do not need a lot to set up your space in this decor style. Simple, elegant pieces in neutral colours are great for it,” says Janki Mehra, an interior designer. As per Pinterest’s 2021 predictions report, searches for Japandi doubled year over year, so much so that it labelled Japandi as ‘the new modern’ of the year
How to rock the Japandi style in your home
No clutter: Make sure you invest in functional furniture. Emphasise on a function-driven space with statement pieces rather than an abundance of items
Whites, off-whites, and beige: These are the perfect shades for Japandi homes. But if you want to add some other colours, then light greys, pinks, blues, and greens are good options
Natural light: Most important is an ample amount of natural light. So, do away with curtains in order to flood your interiors with sunlight
Use of natural elements: Decor pieces made of wood or stone can work well. You can start with a vase, side table, centre table pieces, etc. Make sure you place one or two items in the room to avoid clutter.
Celebs are loving it too!
Ellen DeGeneres’ home in California is a perfect example of the Japandi style, focusing on materials like glass walls, bamboo ceilings, earth tones, and clean furniture lines. Kim Kardashian is another public figure, who has used this trendy home decor style for her home.
