Hands on learning about the wonders of science

An innovative new ‘science shop’ is set to open in Ramsgate High Street later this week.
The commercial unit at number 47, once the home of Boots’ Opticians, has been transformed into an exciting community space with regular interactive workshops.
The collaboration between Thanet-based Discovery Planet and the University of Kent aims to encourage future generations of scientists and engineers, as well as liven up the streetscape.
The opening coincides with British Science Week 2022 (Friday, March 11 to 20) and kicks off with an event called Light Fantastic.
Hands-on workshops, run by research scientists from the university, will explore the amazing properties of light.
Fittingly, given the venue’s most recent use, the sessions will touch on the fact that light science has many medical applications, such as enabling an examination of people’s eyes.
There will be plenty of opportunities to ask the scientists questions about their field, as well as about working in science more generally and routes into different careers.
As with previous Discovery Planet events, the workshops will be free of charge.
Schools can book workshop places on Thursday and Friday (March 10 and 11) while members of the public can drop in on Saturday, March 12 on the hour, every hour from 10am to 3pm.
Light Fantastic is the first of a series of monthly workshops at Discovery Planet HQ:
- April 21 to 23 will look at materials for energy storage
- May 19 to 21 will be about observing space with telescopes
- June 16 to 18 will be all about meteorites
- July 7 to 9 will examine how science can help explore heritage.
Between these dates other university departments and community groups will be invited to deliver additional activities, so keep an eye out for more information.
