The Canadian government has announced that it is to relax its entry restrictions. It is hoped that the move will come as a boost to the country’s tourism industry, with the Easter travel period due to get underway.
From next month, fully vaccinated travellers will no longer have to conduct a pre-departure coronavirus test. Air Canada has welcomed the announcement, describing it as “excellent news”.
A number of other countries have also relaxed their entry restrictions or are currently in the process of doing so. So, what are the new travel rules in Canada?
What are the travel rules for Canada?
From April 1, fully-vaccinated people arriving in Canada will no longer need to present proof of recent infection or a negative Covid test, the i reports. This follows the relaxation of entry restrictions in numerous other countries around the world.
To be considered fully vaccinated in Canada, travellers must have had at least two doses of approved vaccines or a single dose of the one-shot Janssen vaccine. At least 14 days must have elapsed since the last regular vaccination dose was administered.
While pre-departure testing is being scrapped for fully-vaccinated arrivals in Canada, arrivals may be selected for random testing on arriving in the country. However, they will no longer be expected to quarantine while they wait for their result.
Canada’s health minister, Jean-Yves Duclos, said the announcement signalled that the country was “entering into a transition phase of this pandemic”. Other popular destinations including Mauritius and the Maldives are also scrapping pre-departure testing.
The current rules require arrivals aged five and over to provide a negative test result – either a PCR taken within 72 hours before departure or a professionally-observed lateral flow within 24 hours – or proof of recent infection in order to gain entry to Canada.
Air Canada’s vice-president of government and community relations David Rheault welcomed the lifting of this requirement, saying the rule change would “provide travellers with more certainty, allowing them to plan their next trip with more confidence”.
