Robert Halfon, chairman of the education select committee, told ITV’s Good Morning Britain that his constituents are “terrified” and he has “never seen hardship like this”
On his calls to cut fuel duty, and warnings last week that current spiralling prices risk a ‘de facto lockdown’, Mr Halfon said: “Well I would welcome, of course, anything that the Chancellor does, 5p would be helpful. I note that the Irish have done much more than that, perhaps we could be more generous because as you’ve highlighted fuel isn’t just about motorists, it actually feeds into every part of our lives.
“This must be a priority for the Government. It’s the single most important issue domestically facing our nation.”
On energy, Mr Halfon welcomed measures set out by Rishi Sunak last month but insisted ministers had to “go further, and what I’d also like the Government to do is look at the green levies”.
“That would make a significant difference. I’ve said before about VAT on energy, I realise that would be £100 – that’s not going to be a massive dent – but as the saying goes every little helps.”
