Winchester Science Centre gets Charity Patron
Megan McCubbin announced as new patron for Winchester Science Centre
Zoologist and BBC Springwatch presenter, Megan McCubbin, has added another notch to her belt and has teamed up with Winchester Science Centre as their new Charity Patron.
The aim of Megan’s new role is to raise awareness of the charity’s work and to work with the charity to increase interest in STEM (science, technology, engineering and maths) in everyone.
Megan’s passion for nature developed from a young age and has enabled her to have careers as a zoologist, conservationist, TV presenter and wildlife photographer.
The Winchester Science Centre has been encouraging children to explore and enjoy science for over 30 years, and now has a new focus on promoting environmental sustainability.
In 2020, the zoologist became well known figure online and on TV when she began presenting alongside her step father, Chris Packham CBE. Over lockdown, together they inspired people to become closer to nature through their online birdwatching community.
Megan is already familiar with the Science Centre as she visited frequently when growing up. She said:
“Growing up locally, I used to visit Winchester Science Centre regularly as a child and remember how much fun it was.”
Children are naturally curious. The Science Centre can help children harness that curiosity and learn about the world around them. By really getting to grips with the science behind things, they are going to feel empowered to do something productive and powerful. That really excites me.”
Megan visited the Centre on 1 April to formally accept her role and meet the team.
During her visit, she joined a group of school children who were visiting and learning about nature through activities.
CEO of the Science Centre, Ben Ward, said:
“Science is important and significant to everyone who lives on this planet. We create accessible and inclusive experiences, that build children’s confidence and gives them the tool kit to take on world problems.”
