With prices rising, a food budget expert has advised shoppers to look down. Lorna Cooper says people regularly focus on things displayed at eye level or as part of a promotion when they are in the supermarket – and fail to look at the bottom shelf where the cheapest items can often be found.
Posting the top tip on her Facebook page, Feed your family for about £20 a week, she said: “I know I have mentioned supermarket psychology before but I wanted to mention it again. Often when I put the prices of items I buy on here people immediately say ‘where do you buy that so cheap? We don’t get things that cheap here!’
“They are out of eye level. Hidden low down on the shelf out the way where, unless you are specifically looking for them, you are unlikely to notice them. Check the whole shelf!”
The photos she shared with her post certainly back up her words of wisdom – with Tesco’s cheapest Grower’s Harvest rice, at just 45p for 1kg – sitting on the bottom shelf, reports the MEN. Commenting on Lorna’s post, Hollie Boggett said: “Eye level is buy level.”
Beverley Wood said: “After seeing your post I started looking at Sainsbury’s bottom shelves and it’s true! Brown sauce for 45p etc!”
Sarah Webb said: “Took me a while to find their cheaper Greek yoghurt. There it was at the bottom.” Bonnie Williams said: “This is why my nan always gets all the best bargains, she’s only 4ft 6!”
